The image to the right shows how much window inserts increase efficiency, based on the window type the insert is being put in. The lower quality the window, the more the insert increases the overall r-value. The r-value of a window represents the efficiency of the window - specifically how resistant it is to heat flow. The higher the r-value the less heat that can pass through and leak out of the home.
There are 5 factors that account for the r-value: 1) The glazing material used (aka the type of window pane) 2) The number of layers of window panes 3) The amount of air space between window panes 4) Thermal quality of frame and other materials 5) Tightness of fit A window insert increases the r-value by 3 points! |
For every window type the r-value is increased substantially, with a minimum increase of 43% to a high increase of 114%. The higher the quality of the window to start with the lower the percentage of increase, and vise versa (2).
